Civil War soldier letter, Wuiler? Quarters, Head Qrs 30th VA Batt S Shooters, April 7, 1863, 3.5 big pages in ink, from 2nd Lt Peter J. Otey, POW and WIA, to Molly, put in application for leave of absence, General Echols told me he would write a private note to General Jones to say that he had no problem with this.
I stretched it out for 30 days, talked about his plans to make it to Wytheville, has great difficulty getting attendants, talks of the use of the English language, long sentences and jaw breaking words, excellent general content from a sharpshooter who is very intelligent and writes extremely well although a bit verbose at times.
Otey was wounded at New Market, was in the Ladies Relief Hospital and was a POW confined in Fort Delaware. Took oath May 30, 1865. Few very minor tone spots otherwise fresh and solid paper, easy to read handwriting. He signs Peter but the clue to his last name is at the end when he asks Molly to direct letters to Lynchburg care Mrs. Lucy W. Otey.
Peter Johnston Otey
