About Meerschaum
Meerschaum is a white but a bit yellowish mineral founded as large heaps
in deep layers of the ground. When it comes into contact with water, it
gets soft like soap. It is used in the production of pipe and cigarette holder
due to its quality of absorbing nicotine. This mineral founded in Eskişehir,
Turkiye over 300 years ago... Meerschaum is a mine which has become
the symbol of Eşkişehir, since Eskişehir is the only place, where
Meerschaum is extracted on Earth.
The Myth of Meerschaum
In a myth about the discovery of Meerschaum, it is told as; According to
the rumor, the one who discovered the Meerschaum first and showed the
heading of it was mole. A young man who was going to his village in a
summer daysit crossed-legged and started to eat his food when he got
tired. Everything happenedatthat time. In a hole which caught his eye,he
saw a mole taking a white stone out by rolling it roughly. The mole started
to play with the round stone. This is a story!... As soon as the young man
tried to touch this round stuff, the mole got into the hole immediately.
The young man played with the stone in his hand for a while, and then he
took out his knife and started to dress that milk white stone.With his first
blow with the knife, an agonizing sound that he had never heard in his
inner world burst out: \" Oh, the mankind! What if you did not hurt me!..\"
The young man astonished and threw the stone. When the stone felt
down, it turned into an adorable girl. Then she was broken into small
pieces and became very very round. In front of the open-mouthed stare of
young man, she returned to the hole she had come from by rolling
and disappeared. With no hesitation, he started to disinter the hole. Day
after day, night after night....
The peasents looking for the young man found him suffocated in a very
narrow well leading to the deeps of the ground. However, his skinned,
bloody fingers were holding a few meerschaums very firmly...
