Great Running 1897 Seth Thomas Adamantine Clock #102
This is fabulous looking strong running eight day Thomas Adamantine hour and half hour strike mantel clock. This Seth Thomas temple style clock (known as "black mantel" in the antique trade) and has attractive Art Deco lion heads and bronze feet.
The clock has a 6-inch dial with brass bezel and sash with original back label dated September 7, 1880. The clock is 13 ½ inches long 11 inches tall and 6 inches deep. With original: case, back label, dial, bezel, key, movement, gong, bob, hardware and hands. (That is what I know).
Many Seth Thomas clocks from 1881 to 1918 have a date code stamped in ink on the bottom. Usually, the year is done in reverse, followed by a letter A - L representing the month.
The clock has minor wear normally associated with old clocks. The clock back has a wonderful stylized Seth Thomas logo on the steel door. Seth Thomas Adamantine clocks are popular and highly favored by collectors of American clocks. Adamantine clocks have enjoyed great appreciation and popularity and are of great quality.
Thomas is well known for their “Adamantine” black mantel clocks, which were made starting in 1882. Adamantine is a celluloid veneer, glued to the wood case. Adamantine veneer was made in black and white, and in colored patterns such as wood grain, onyx and marble.
