CloudComix #1 Only Printing / June, 1971 / 36 Pages / Kitchen Sink

PeterBramley\'s fifteen pages of Cahoot Cheroot cowboy stories (including one that isa photo collage) are sometimes mildly amusing, and Bill Skurski\'s goofy\"Weird Romance\" is good for a chuckle, but overallCloud Comix#1is a mish-mash of so-so stories and barely competent art. To be honest, the best thing here is Bramley\'s cover (love the Mr. Natural t-shirt!). HISTORICAL FOOTNOTES: It is currently unknownhow many copies of this comic book were printed. It has not been reprinted.

CloudComix(which changed toCloudComicsfor issue 2 for nodiscernable reason) is one of those comic titles that probably didn\'t help theunderground comic book movement prosper. By 1969, the comic revolution was wellunderway, and some pretty crappy books began to emerge on the market. Allthrough the early 1970s, publishers were churning out one underground afteranother trying to capitalize on the movement, and they would take just aboutanybody and their half-dead grandmother to create an underground comic, whetherthey had any talent or not.

Make no mistake,Cloud Comixdid have a few talented creators whocontributed to the two comics (there were about 14 creators involved in the twobooks). But for the most part, the decent artists were far outweighed by somereally amateurish hacks who never should have seen the light of day in a comicbook. Worse yet, while other crappy undergrounds often appeared crappy fromtheir front cover art,Cloud Comix#1 actually has a very nice frontcover by Peter Bramley. But that was like false advertising, as the contentinside never matched the quality standard established by the cover.I am not against all mediocre comic creators. Giving Joe Schmoe a chance tocontributed to a real comic book was part of the beauty of underground comics.Buckwheat Florida and Rory Hayes would\'ve never gotten a chance to publish realcomic books if it wasn\'t for the underground revolution. Unfortunately, thevast majority of these Joe Schmoes were lousy cartoonists and even worsestorytellers.Cloud Comixis not even close to the worst comics the underground eraoffers, and the second issue was significantly better than the first, but itremains in that group of comics that crowded the marketplace and helped obscuresome of the best comic books that were ever published.
