Collecting Souls, Gathering Dust : The Struggles of Two American Artists, Alice Neel and Rhoda Medary by Gerald L. Belcher and Margaret L. Belcher, published by Paragon House in 1991, hardcover with dust jacket, 1st Edition, signed by both authors (see photo 6).
The book has slightly beige pages from age and the both covers are slightly splayed out (see photos 5 & 12). The dust jacket has wear, small stains and a red mark on the top of the pages (see photos 1-5 & 12).
Two artists, two friends, two very different lives with one everlasting bond - the passionate soul of the painter. In the 1920s Alice Neal and Rhoda Medary were close friends at art school who dreamed of becoming renowned painters. For Alice Neal the dream was fulfilled: She became a foremost 20th century American artist, the first woman to have a one-person show at the Whitney Museum, a celebrated portrait painter known as the collector of souls. Rhoda Medary chose a different life - as a housewife whose work remained obscure, gathering dust in musty basements, and whose talent went unused for many years.
