The Vicksburg Civil War Final Campaign began May, 1863 when General US Grant moved inland from Grand Gulf & to Hawkins Ferry east to Raymond & Jackson, Mississippi. An original May 7, 1863 Copy letter from Grant at HQ, Dept of the Tennessee, Hawkins Ferry to Col William Silliman Hillyer, Grants Aide de Camp, re the status of road building & boat transport of the Army\'s rations from Grand Gulf, with 2 urgent postscripts. A significant original May 1863 HQ Copy Letter. In his Memoirs Grant cites this supply problem as dictating his move to invest Vicksburg from the East. 2pp 8 x 11\" ink. Glue stains on reverse, Overall Exc.During the Civil War a commander would send a the letter to subordinate officers; the officer would then make a copy for his records before forwarding the original to the War Department or to other commands. This is the original, 1863 copy letter made for the officer so he would have proof that he had received the letter from General Grant and followed up on his instructions. The officer who received the letter would usually save his own copy to take home after the War, as a record in case there were later questions as to whether he received the letter and carried out the instructions or orders. This \"copy letter\" is a one of a kind letter and original in itself, probably made by the receiving officer\'s clerk, in camp, usually made on the day received or within a few days.
