ANice, Medium, HighlyIlluminated, Arabic Manuscript Koran.Complete KORAN. 302 leaves (604 pages); size: 12 x17 cm; 15 lines to a page. The Arabic iswritten in small but beautiful, clear, and elegantnaskhī script; in black ink. The Arabic text isvocalized throughout.

Headingsof chapters are written in white ink on gold strips. Two leaves at the beginning of the Koran arebeautifully illuminated in gold and colors.All verses are separated by rosettes in gold and other colors. Divisions of the Koran are marked inmedallions in gold and colors on the margins.There are tens of such medallions.Recitational marks are all in red.All pages are ruled in several lines of gold and blue.

Nicely bound in full brownleather, with a flap in the Islamic tradition of bookbinding; covers are embossed in central medallion. Covers aresomewhat rubbed, but still in excellent condition. Minor smudges. A few leaves have beenrepaired without loss, except for the second leaf, where two are lost.

Thelayout and decorations indicate its Ottoman Turkish origin. Probably from the end of the eighteenthcentury. [K93]
