Description: Upfor sale is the complete three book series titled “The Civil War: ANarrative” by Shelby Foote. The seriesis mainly concerned with military history though it discusses political andsocial themes. Shelby Foote started offa novelist, but he became most famous for historical narratives. Foote deeply believed that novelists were themost capable of telling history. Manywere skeptical of the accuracy, but Foote declared that writing narrative historywas “not a question of twisting the facts into a narrative… it is discoveringthe plot that\'s there just as the painter discovered the colors in shadows.” Foote went on to say that a novelist knows theirfictional characters in their mind and they stay true to that individual whenthey write - historical narratives are no different except the characters were realand therefore defined by historical facts and not one’s imagination.

This edition from RandomHouse has silver letters and designs along the spinewhich would be seen when displayed on a bookshelf. The cover is a grey “cloth” of unevensurface/weave with natural color variations. The edges of the pages are uneven which give a rustic feel. The original copyrights range from 1958 to1974. The last volume is labeled as afirst edition, but the other two do not have the edition listed. The books are a matched set. Eachbook contains a table of contents, index, color maps inside the front and backcovers, as well as additional maps and diagrams withinthe text that are in black and white.

Dimensions: Each book is approximately 9 7/8 inches high x 2.25 incheswide x 6.75 inches deep. The width ofeach book varies slightly depending on the total number of pages included.

Condition: The book serieswas read by my father and was on display in our front room for around 40years. The books were not in directsunlight and our climate has no moisture in the air. If the books originally came with dustjackets, they were removed in order to enjoy the silver lettering and thereforethere are no dust jackets. The top edges of the pages are dyed blue-grey. At times thebottom edges of the pages are not cut evenly and this is original to thebook. All of the books show age, use,and external staining/discoloration. I thinksome of the stains on the covers could be cleaned if done properly. Internally, the majority of pages appear as usedvery good to like new. However, especially in the first book, there are a number of pages with a slight warpingwhere a thumb was used hold the book open to a particular page or wheregrabbing occurred to turn a page. Thevery tips of pages can be slightly curved/bent.Each book’s individual condition is listed below. Many of the tiny dots and pinpoint lines, were most likely original to the book’s printing.

“Part I: Fort Sumter to Perryville” was clearly read and by different individuals. Overall, the book is in acceptable to goodcondition. The cover has discoloration/stainingin places including a round stain on the front cover that is about a third ofan inch wide. The cover is completelyintact. When the book is closed, thereare some discolorations to the external edge of the pages. Inside the front cover, there is an orangedot on Florida’s handle near the spine. A significant number of pages have warpingwhere a finger was placed to hold the book open or to turn pages. Some of those areas also have discoloration orstaining (only discolorations beyond a certain visibility level will be listedhere). Page 44 has a smudge in marginand it is over a few words – but it is very pale so all the words are clearlylegible. Page 60 has a very small dot inthe margin. Page 91 has seven smudgedgrey lines in the margin of varying paleness.Page 97 has a pale round stain about ½ across in the right margin. Page 117 has a pinpoint dash/line in the topmargin. Page 122 has a grey smudge overthe text but its so pale that the words are clearly readable. Page 155 has a light stain/smudge and onesmudged line in the margin. Page 156 hasa tiny dot between paragraphs. Page 162has a pale stain in the margin. Pages167-170 show a lot of warping/wrinkling from contact with a liquid. Page 196 has a stain in the top right corner,a pale smudge between the words drinking and resign, and a pale smudge in thebottom margin. Page 205 has a small andmedium stain in the margin. Page 493 has two small dashes in themargin. There are no tears, holes, highlighting, writing, or anything else that would impede the legibility of thebook.

“Part II: Fredericksburg to Meridian” was clearly read, but less times than part I and probablyby fewer individuals. Overall, the book entireis in good condition but quite a number of pages are in very good condition. The cover has discoloration/staining inplaces particularly some rust-colored stains (see photo). The cover is completely intact. When the book is closed, there are somediscolorations to the external edge of the pages. On the bottom edge and side edge of the pagesthere is a shallow indent/scratch for about half of the book yet on each pageit is not even a mm in depth and at times completely unnoticeable. Some pages have warping where a finger wasplaced to hold the book open and some of those areas also have discoloration – thereis significantly less of this than in part I of the series. (only discolorations beyond a certain visibilitylevel will be listed). On a few pagesthere is a wrinkle paralleling the spine and seems to be from the bindingprocess. Many pages also have the tip ofthe bottom corner missing. Page 51-98has a slightly bent top corner but it gets smaller and less noticeable as youprogress through the book. The cover hasdiscoloration/staining in places. The bluearea on the spine looks a bit worn (see photo). The cover is completely intact. When the book is closed, there are some discolorations to the externaledge of the pages and occasional dings due to the uneven rustic edges.
