Consulat and Empire styles, French book by C.Huchet de Quénetain
This hardcover book with 192 full color illustrated pages presents the French Consulat and Empire styles.
The Empire style embodies the second phase of classicism in the decorative arts, coherent synthesis of different types of ornamentation \"classical\" enriched with elements borrowed from Egyptian art. On the walls and furniture, large bare surfaces receive decorative patterns well defined (friezes, banners, festoons, allegorical figures, cartridges, ellipses, diamonds), whose function is strictly ornamental. In the work of interior decoration of two major official architects of the time, Percier and Fontaine, one detects a clear influence of Pompeian style.
The Empire style appears linked to the advent of the new society and the beginnings of industrialization: including mechanical manufacturing of certain elements (tissue executed on Jacquard looms, industrial goldsmith and metalwork).
It meets the needs of that society: wealth and bourgeois comfort, rapid and abundant production. The Emperor himself encourages luxury industries in particular by developing the Sèvres porcelain factory.
This book includes many previously unpublished information: reproductions, assignments, etc., but above all offers for the first time the advantage of presenting the cabinetmaking achievements of the house Lignereux which will be taken by the famous French bronze sculptor Pierre-Philippe Thomire.Contents:CABINETMAKERS AND STYLE, GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
