LZ 129 Hindenburg (Deutsche Luftschiff Zeppelin #129; Registration: D-LZ 129, also known as Lufthansa Flight 129 with American Airlines) was a large German commercial passenger-carrying rigid airship, the lead ship of the “Hindenburg” class, the longest class of flying machine and the largest airship by envelope volume. It was designed and built by the Zeppelin Company (Luftschiffbau Zeppelin GmbH) on the shores of Lake Constance in Friedrichshafen and was operated by the German Zeppelin Airline Company (Deutsche Zeppelin-Reederei). The airship flew from March 1936 until destroyed by fire 14 months later on May 6, 1937, at the end of the first North American transatlantic journey of its second season of service. Thirty-six people died in the accident, which occurred while landing at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in Manchester Township, New Jersey, United States. The Hindenburg also served as The Third Reich Flag ship or a propaganda machine.

Hindenburg was named after the late Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg (1847?1934), President of Germany (1925?1934).

Boardpost (Postal Cancel on board the Hindenburg Airship), authentic and a part of history!!!

Flight Germany to Berlin Germany, August 1936, Opening Day of 1936 Olympics, Olympiafahrt.

1936 Berlin Olympic Games

The Hindenburg was a sub-post office of the Frankfurt post office, and underwrote expenses by carrying mail. It provided the first regularly scheduled, entirely by air post service between Europe and North America. The post office operated only during flight. Postmasters Kurt schooner (1936) and max label (1937) changed the date stamp daily to postmark mail from passengers and crew with the special onboard marking.

The airship was used for propaganda purposes when it flew over the Olympic stadium in Berlin on August 1st during the opening ceremonies of the 1936 summer Olympic Games. Shortly before the arrival of Adolf AH to declare the games open, the airship crossed low over the packed stadium.

To promote the sporting event, the Olympic Games rings were painted on the side of the Hindenburg’s hull. After flying over Olympic stadium, the Hindenburg dropped twenty bags of mail by parachute at the Berlin airport.

This postcard has the special commemorative cachet which identifies mail flown by the Hindenburg in 1936 over the Olympic stadium in Berlin. In addition it has an onboard postmark dated august 1st 1936, and a postmark from the Berlin central airport also dated August 1st 1936.
