I hand cut this focal bead which measures 51x14mm and is 11mm thick with a 3mm side drill hole.   A freeform swoosh shape with a nice polish.   A beautiful variegated green striped stone and the lighter colored stripes are CHATOYANT, which is to say that they exhibit a cats eye effect like tiger\'s eye does.  Chatoyant comes from the French words \"chat oeil\" or \"cat eye.\"

Chain not included.  See the rest of my listings in my DVHdesigns Etsy shop AND my store for more focal  beads, custom cut cabochons, cold worked glass, genuine jet mourning beads, sterling chains just for beads, and more!  Also, feel free check out my DVHdesigns website where you can see what I\'m up to in the studio, as well as learn more about me, my work, and my upcoming show-lecture schedule.

This is a relatively new stone on the market, only been seeing it for about 10 years or less.   I have only seen it in two forms:  mass cut beads and cabs done cheaply in China, and ONE barrel of rough in Quartzite, AZ this year and the barrel was marked \"Brazil\" and the dealers were Brazilians.  I bought four nice chunks of this material when I was in Quartzite and wish I had bought more!  It cuts like a dream. Here\'s what \"I know\" about this beautiful and unusual new lapidary material....

....the Chinese are selling it as \"Green Zebra Jasper.\"   I think \"Green Zebra\" is a good modifier for this stone as it IS striped like zebras are striped and it IS green, however it is DEFINITELY NOT A JASPER. It is much, much softer than any jasper and is definitely not silicated (tunred to quartz) as jasper is. The Chinese exporters are using the word \"jasper\" much like they use the word \"jade\", which is to say that they are using it in place of the word \"stone\"!!!  The main material is serpentine.  The chatoyant veins which create the wonderful cat\'s eye stripes throughout the stone are veins of chrysotile.

Meanwhile I will call this beautiful new stone \"Green Zebra \'Jasper\'\" as that is the name it is going by in the trade, but I will do my best to educate folks about what it is.  I think a better name would simply be \"Green Zebra Stone\" or even \"Green Zebra Tiger Eye\" to highlight it\'s unique chatoyant effects.  A search on for \"Green Zebra Jasper\" will yield results that include this kind of material, along with another green and black striped stone that is NOT chatoyant (and most likely NOT a jasper either) along with a very few stones which ARE a green striped stone that actually IS a jasper!  While the other chatoyant beads and cabs of this material on are quite inexpensive, they are all mass cut calibrated shapes from China with NO information about the stone and NO originality in their cutting.  Should you want a unique, custom cut, original piece of lapidary art out of this wonderful new material you can pay a little bit more and buy hand made from an American artist (me!).  I hope you enjoy this lovely new gemstone as much as I have enjoyed discovering it and working with it.

If anyone has any more information about this beautiful new lapidary material please contact me and let me know.  For those interested in the metaphysical properties of this material, I would say that it most likely has the same metaphysical properties as BOTH serpentine AND tiger\'s eye!  A quick google search for their metaphysical properties led me to these informative links, so if you\'re interested, check them out.  Metaphysical properties of SERPENTINE  and TIGER\'S EYE.
