Macchia, meaning“a spot” in Italian, is also the name of one of the most celebrated glass workseries made by Dale Chihuly. The idea for this chromatically opulent cycle wasborn from his desire to use the 300 colors he had in his shop all at once. Whatseemed to be an eccentric endeavor came out as a wonderful display of theartist’s creativity - a sculptural glass series characterized by extraordinarynuances and contrasts.

The process of creating the Macchia started with each workbeing dotted with small shards of colored glass, then exposed to heat duringthe blowing procedure. In order to achieve a greater contrast between theinterior and the exterior, Chihuly added another layer - the cloud - in betweenthe two coats, and a special highlight color to seal the piece with the lipwrap. Works from the series often contain several parts juxtaposed to eachother. This playful group of works displays asymmetry, translucency and exoticbrilliance, while the color appears to achieve the volume it has never reached before.

A rare piece, “Green and Lapis Macchia Pair” dates to thevery beginnings of this acclaimed series in 1981, to the very year of itsconception. Marine palette alludes to the “Macchia” connections with theartist’s previous series, “Seaforms”, although the shapes and especially themanner of coloration entirely new. The freckled, turquoise outer shellencapsulates the lapis lazuli heart in an undulating harmony. The two fragmentsare connected by the like-colored accents and through a cobalt lip wrap, surrounding the whole.
