As Commander of the Royal North British Regiment of Dragoons, he pledges payment to Alexander Adair for the uniforms of enlisted personnel for the second half of 1803.
Promissory Note signed: "David Dundas", 1 page, 8x13. No place, 1803 February 25. As General of his Majesty's Forces and Colonel of the Second, or Royal North British Regiment of Dragoons, he promises to Alexander Adair of Pall Mall, in the County of Middlesex, payment in full from the Paymaster General for clothing 28 Sergeants, 24 Corporals, 8 Trumpeters, 8 Household, 456 Privates, 35 Warrant Officers and 24 Contingent others, for the period 6 July to 24 December of 1803. [Officers were expected to supply their own uniforms.] The sum owed amounted to 1, 309 pounds, nine shillings and nine pence. Witnessed by two others. Docketed in left margin by the Office for Auditing Public Accounts. Sir David Dundas, 1st Baronet (1735-1820) fought for Britain against France in the Seven Years War (European battles only), and the Wars of the French Revolution, rising through the ranks from lieutenant to general. Placed in command as Colonel of the 2nd Dragoons on May 9, 1801, he was promoted to General on April 24, 1802. Three months after he signed this document, he was appointed Knight of the Order of the Bath (April 28, 1803). He was Commander-in-Chief of the Forces from 1809 to 1811. A stickler for drill, called "Old Pivot" by his troops, he wrote several military manuals, notably Principles of Military Movements (1788). Dundas scorned the flexible, light infantry tactics favored by Generals Cornwallis and Howe after their experience fighting the American colonists. He favored instead the massed shock formations of the Prussian Army. Normal mailing folds. Lightly toned. Corners lightly worn and creased. Surface creases. Tape on bottom edge. Small tears on folds. Stains along edges. Small tear on top left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
