David Hendler(1904-1984)anIsraelipainter, who was awarded theDizengoffPrizefor painting and was called \"thepainterofTel Aviv\".

David Hendler was born in 1904 in Kiev, theRussian Empire (today Ukraine),to a Hasidic family.
When he was four, the family moved to Prague. As a teenager, he learned copper beating and tinsmithing, and found work in these trades. He also studied drawing privately with Prof. Pichel of the Academy of Art in Prague.
In 1924, he immigrated to the Land of Israel as a pioneer on his own and joined Gdud Ha\'avoda. From 1929, he devoted himself to painting.
In 1936, Hendler became a member of“Massad”, a group of young local artists, such asAharon Avni, Avigdor Stematzky, Arie Aroch, Joseph Kossonogi, Zvi Shor, Mordechai Levanon, and Israel Paldi.
His work from that period shows the influence of modernist French painting.
In the mid-1940s, Hendler met the artist Aviva Uri, who began to study drawing with him. They married in 1963.
In the 1950s, he rarely showed his work.
In 1961, his drawings were exhibited at Bezalel\'s national museum and in 1977, Tel Aviv Museum mounted a solo exhibition of his work.Hendler is known for his drawings andsketches of people and street scenes, many of them in small format: he had a delicate sense ofcolor, and his drawings, painted with a fingernail and varied withafewwaterstains, were common in many houses inTel Avivand other cities throughout Israel.
In essence, Hendlerwasan extraordinary drawercharacterized by the lightness of his touchon paper and the delicacy of the drawing line.His nude paintings showed the influence ofHenri Matisse.
Handler\'s had a great influence on drawing in Israel, which is evident in the works ofAryeh Navon,AvigdorSteimatzky and others.
The main motifs in his paintings are workers, horses and other working animals, the old houses in Tel Aviv and the promenade of Tel Aviv.
During his lifetime Hendler painted many works of art to make a living.
He could finish creating a painting in a few minutes.He made a modest living so he was forced to sell his works door to door trying to sell his pictures for pennies.
His had a great influence on the painter,Aviva Uri. His works constitute one of the most faithful and humane documentation of the beginning of the Zionist revival in the Land of Israel.
David Hendler died inTel Aviv in1984and was buried inthe Kiryat Shaul cemetery.
