The Rarest of Rare - signed David Yurman \"Angel and Mermaid\" Necklace from 1974Any true David Yurman aficionado knows the back-story of David and artist wife, Sybil Kleinrock, founders of the widely successful DY jewelry line.
Their first commercial venture was the Putnam Art Works, where she painted and he sculpted. One biographer wrote:\"After having created a procession of protest art, Yurman returned to his romantic sculptures, many of them angels. Sybil asked him to turn one of the angels into a belt, and that was the beginning of their jewelry. Sybil wore the belt to an art gallery and it attracted the gallery owner’s attention who inquired if it was for sale. Sybil saw the commercial opportunity and in the early 1970s, David and Sybil formed their own company called “Putnam Art Works.” Over the course of a decade, they displayed their designs and paintings at various craft fairs.
In 1980, David and Sybil Yurman founded the brand and company \'David Yurman\'.\" 2/10/11At a David Yurman store opening some years ago, I inquired of the designer where one could view and perhaps acquire a David Yurman sculpture. \"No where I know of,\" was his reply. \"I own most of my own sculpture and it\'s not for sale.\" Some months later, while searching the net, I found this single necklace for sale. Understanding how rare a find, I bought it immediately.
Recently, I sent photos and exchanged emails with the DY Corporation to further research this necklace. Here\'s an excerpt of their response:In response to your questions:1. Unfortunately I have no images of this piece. Our necklace is currently with Mrs. Yurman so we have not had a chance to photograph it.
2. David did not design in collections during the Putnam Art Works time due to how they were made. Each piece is extremely unique from the direct welding he used to create them.
3. David does not know how many \"angel and the mermaid\" necklaces he made. They were typically sold at craft fairs in the NY area.
4. As for the date, 1974 seems likely, as David Yurman (the company) was formed in 1980. (CM-DY to CK - December 10, 2013)The is an amazing opportunity for David Yurman collectors who are also art collectors. If you own and admire DY jewelry, the \"Angel and Mermaid\" necklace is a rare, transitional work from true sculpture to wearable art, the precursor of the David Yurman jewelry line we know today.Description:
