I removed it from the box and test using both batteries (not included) and the Dept 56 Brite Lites Adapter #52256 not included. It worked perfectly both ways. Though like anything, it appeared to us to be brighter when using the adapter vs. batteries
It needs double faced tape on the bottom of the Dragon and the Dragon then set on the plastic white base, to set upright.
This is one of those pieces where excess factory glue can be noticeable -
