Just imagine.... snow-laden trees, wreaths at the windows, and welcome mats out. These words have come to present the charming period buildings and soft glowing lights of The Original Snow Village. On a holiday outing many years ago, a group of friends planned to enjoy Christmas dinner at a small country inn located in a quiet town on the St.Croix River. The journey to the inn was delightful, as everyone recalled childhood memories and family traditions. While the group drove merrily through the snow-covered countryside they passed by frosty farmland, peaceful churches, busting shops, and warm, bright houses. Suddenly, as they rounded a bend in the road, conversation stopped. Spread out before them was a small, turn-of-the-century village, decorated for the holidays. The setting was so heartwarming, everyone knew that this evening would be a cherished memory forever. An idea occurred that night... to recreate the charming little village and the feeling it inspired, scaling it down so that it could exist for everyone, everywhere. That idea became a reality when Department 56 introduced the Original Snow Village.

One Christmas evening, a group of friends set off to enjoy a dinner of celebration at a small country inn nestled in a quiet river town. As they rounded a bend in the road, they saw the small, old-fashioned village decorated for the holidays. The lights, like fairies, glowed and sparkled amid the freshly fallen snow. All evening, the conversation was full of Christmas memories and the visions the tiny town had evoked. Amidst the jovial banter and magical memories, the idea for a lighted Christmas village was born. That spark of an idea became a reality when, in 1976, Department 56 introduced a series of six hand-painted, ceramic buildings. The rest is history.
