Internationally known artist Don Cincone was born to black parents, in a sharecroppers shack, in Alto, La., in 1936.

He doesn\'t recall when he started school because in those days all able hands had to work in the cotton harvest. The school days he does remember, he spent in a one-room school house.

It was there where he learned the \"negro spirituals\" that he kept within his heart through the years. \"I remember how drawing, drama and singing were all intermingled with math, history and reading,\" he said.

At age seven, Cincone moved with his family to Monroe, where he attended Carroll High school. He would later attend Southern University where he received a Bachelors degree in Art. When he graduated, he asked the head of the art department what he should do after graduation.

He was told to teach art, but that did not satisfy him. He opted for exploring Europe. After touring Denmark, Holland, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy he headed for Haiti and Mexico. Returning from Canada he spent some time in New York.

He also got married there and the newlyweds went to California where he attended the San Francisco School of Fashion Design. When trying to make a career in fashion design in California, he was told that \"his kind\" was not allowed in fashion design there.

Instead of giving up, he went back to his first love, art. Because of many requests, Don Cincone began teaching art in 1966 and continued until 1993. Universal Studios also commissioned him to create 85 original paintings for the movie The Art of Love (1965).

Interested parties can find Cincone\'s artwork in the Northeast Louisiana Delta African American Heritage Museum. This piece measures 15\" x 22\" and edition number 500/2000 and framed. It was done in 1974.
