On the night of September 13th -14th, 1814 a gallant band of defenders at Fort McHenry protecting Baltimore Harbor held off a British fleet and invasion force. Here we see American sailors manning the guns in the upper Water Battery at the height of the bombardment while the storm Flag flies in the background on the fort. This event later became the inspiration for our national anthem written by Francis Scott Key who witnessed the event.
