I just purchased this antique German porcelain plate from a local estate here in Central Virginia. The plate bears the underglaze \"AR\" / \"Augustus Rex\" monogram utilized by the Meissen factory during the first half of the 18th century. This plate, however, is characteristic of the hand painted wares produced by Helena Wolfsohn\'s Dresden / Saxony decorating studio (Porzellanmalerei Helena Wolfsohn Nachf ) during the 1870\'s. Wolfsohn purchased white ware blanks from Meissen and used a slightly modified \"AR\" mark until forced to desist in 1881. This plate is beautifully executed with fine detail to the reticulated / pierced borders and embossed acanthus scrolled cartouches. The central well has an endearing hand painted Rococo scene showing two children standing either side of a garden gate. The hand painting is of the highest quality with fine line, rich color and subtle shading throughout. I believe this plate was commissioned as part of an elegant service, each monogramed \"KST\" (I did purchase four additional plates, each with unique scenes and the same monogram.) The plate measures 9\" in diameter and 1 1/8\" deep. The piece is in excellent condition with no damage or restoration, there is some wear from stacking at the edge of the well (pictured).
