Potting Lotus Tubers.

A dwarf variety worksespecially well in a small-bowl water garden.

Spring plantinginstructions

Choose a bowl that is at least 6” deep and 12” wide. This depth is needed to submerge the rhizomeand also allow room for leaves or blooms that will float on the surface of thewater. Use heavy soil rich in organicmatter, such as aquatic potting soil, or good garden dirt free ofherbicides. Fill your bowl with thesoil deep enough to bury your tuber fully with just the tip above the soilline. Wet your soil before planting.

How to plant:

Be very careful whenhandling your tuber as the delicate tips can break off easily if bumped. Form an angled trench in the bowl\'s wet soil. Anglethe rhizome so that the bottom of the tuber sits about 2” beneath the surfaceand the tip is just above the soil. Fillthe trench with soil and top with a thin layer of small rocks or gravel to holdthe tuber down when the bowl is filled with water. Cover the tuber with 4-6” of water..

Feeding

Use liquid fertilizer formulated for pond plants for abowl-grown lotus after the lotus shows growth late in spring. Jobes Fruit tree sticks can be broken intosmall pieces and a piece pushed down into the bottom of the bowl also. Feed once a month during the growing andbloom season. A lotus plant doesn\'trequire fertilizer during winter months.

Add water as needed. Setyour lotus in an area that receives full, all-day sunlight and wheretemperatures do not drop below freezing. In areas where freezing in not aproblem, the bowl can remain outside. The lotus\' foliage may die back in latefall or early winter. Cut off the dead foliage, and let the lotus remaindormant until spring.

The seed heads can be dried and used in dried flowerarrangements, and the seeds themselves can be popped like corn. The tubers canbe fried, boiled or made into soups.
