Dwight David Eisenhower (1890-1969) -- was the 34th President of the United States from1953 until 1961. On January 19, 1961, Eisenhower went before the nationon live TV and gave a controversial \"goodbye\"speech, in which he warned the nation about thedangers of massive, deficit spending, and, the growing influence of warning on deficit spending: \"We . . . must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering for our own ease and convenience the precious resources of tomorrow. We cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without riskingthe loss also of their political and spiritual heritage. We want democracyto survive for all generations to come, not to become the insolvent phantomof tomorrow...\"

His warning on the military: \"..In the councils of government, we must guard againstthe acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, bythe military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power existsand will persist.
