If you’re a novelty clock, E. N. Welch clock enthusiast or opera lover please give this clock serious consideration. This clock is seldom seen on the market for sale. Circa late 1880’s.

The clock is a depiction of a Japanese fan. The fan is part of the opera characters costume as depicted in the original theater poster for The Mikado. See last pic.

Elisha N. Welch (Founder) had a fondness for the opera and many of the clocks made by the E. N. Welch Manufacturing Co., Forestville, CT are named after opera stars and displays his predilection for the opera.

The Mikado; or, The Town of Titipuis acomic operain two acts, with music byArthur SullivanandlibrettobyW. S. Gilbert, their ninth of fourteenoperatic collaborations. It opened on 14 March 1885, inLondon, where it ran at theSavoy Theatrefor 672 performances, which was the second longest run for any work of musical theatre and one of the longest runs of any theatre piece up to that time. Before the end of 1885, it was estimated that, in Europe and America, at least 150 companies were producing the opera.

Setting the opera inJapan, an exotic locale far away from Britain, allowed Gilbert to satirize British politics and institutions more freely by disguising them as Japanese. Gilbert used foreign or fictional locales in several operas, includingThe Mikado,Princess Ida,The Gondoliers,Utopia, LimitedandThe Grand Duke,to soften the impact of his pointed satire of British style=\"margin-left:.2in; text-indent:-.2in;\">· E.
