The hats were traditionally worn by the women in the tribes. Some of the hats were flat so they could wear them and carry items on top of their heads. This item appears to be worn only as a hat. It is a twined geometric design using an overlay technique. The tribes are commonly located in the Cascade Mountains of Northern California. Common materials used for the hats are California hazel, bear grass, maidenhair fern, pine root and squaw grass. The hat measures approx 4.5\" Height and approx 7\" in diameter.
