Edwin Davis French: a Memorial. His Life...His Art. New York: Privately Printed, 1908. First edition, number 180/425 printed on Italian hand-made paper. Quarter cloth over paper-covered boards. 95 pp. With a frontispiece portrait of French and other plates showing examples of his work (French was an engraver of bookplates).This copy belonged to Alice Flint Brooks, who worked at the Essex Institute in Salem, MA, and was later manager at the School for the Museum of Fine Arts. Her bookplate is affixed to the front pastedown, and her receipt for ordering the book is tipped in to the third blank. In addition, an autograph letter signed by French and addressed to Brooks is tipped in to the second blank. In it, he asks Brooks to send him his pen, which he believes he left at the Essex Institute. There is an additional bookplate (Lawrence Waters Jenkins) to the front free endpaper, and two other loose bookplates laid in.Overall condition is very good. Book has some light wear to the extremities, but is clean inside (apart from a few pencil notes to the front endpapers). Some of the tissue guards are loose. The slipcase is a bit battered, with the long end missing.Free shipping in the US via Media Mail.
