Hi, thank you for having a look at my sales. Joanie’s is Very excited to be offering the highly important estate collection of A Abraham. The collection consists of many fine and important jades and scholarly stone objects with numerous examples spanning from the 19th century to several thousand years old.

Provenance: If you follow my sales you will know I have sold a number of important examples from this collection over the past year. I have now been commissioned to sell the rest of the collection including many of the most important and extremely rare examples. Abraham was a highly respected Asian Arts dealer and collector that specialized in jades, beads, and archaic scholarly objects. From the 1950-70’s period Abraham frequently travelled to China, Hong Kong, New York, and London on buying trips. I am told Abraham was also good friends with many Archeologists and people unearthing important imperial tombs at the time and purchased a large number of examples directly from them. Abraham owned the “Imperial Jade shop” located in the famous King Edward Hotel in Toronto until the hotel closed for major renovations in 1976, 40 years ago. Abraham’s jade shop was never reopened again. When the shop closed some of the pieces were sent to Sotheby’s in New York for sale. Abraham kept many of his most favorite examples that are now being offered in this sale. Most of the pieces have been in storage since the shop closed in 1976 and have not seen the light of day until now! There are also a number of pieces in the collection from the highly important Sir David Percival collection, including a Huang jade pendant being offered in this sale as you will see. Much of the Percival collection is now housed in the British museum and is considered one of the finest and most important collections known.

A very special once in a life-time event, and surely one of my finest and most important sales to date! As my sales have run for upwards of 12 years, all items are sold Without Reserve! Special note: Around 12 years ago I wrote an article for my customers that in my opinion at the time fine Republic porcelain works were far undervalued, mostly that of the eight friends of Zhushan and Wang Bu. Around 8 years ago I wrote a similar article on Ming and Song dynasty monochrome wares that I also indicated were selling far undervalue at the time. If you follow the market you will know those that listened to my predictions at the time have greatly prospered with items selling for 10s and in some cases far higher amounts today than they were back then. I have a great interest in Chinese archaic works myself as well and have kept a keen eye on the market. I noticed around 2-3 years ago some astonishing prices were being achieved for archaic jades. Then last year with the Hatfield collection Christies offered seemed to start an even bigger surge in the demand for fine archaic jades. Even Christies sale last week in Hong Kong had a number of small archaic jade pieces that brought some astonishing amounts. I believe this is just the beginning of this trend, and those that are acquiring legitimate examples such as I am offered will be extremely happy with their investments in years to come.

Up for sale is an amazing and large Chinese carved Spinach jade dragon figural plaque. This plaque is an exceptional and I believe rarely found example. The plaque is carved of a very large hu of authentic natural spinach jade. The spinach jade is a rich and vibrant choice spinach jade color as seen. The plaque is very finely and ornately carved throughout with a large imperial dragon among ruyi foliate and clouds. The back side of the plaque also has an interesting design with carved dragon that has then been richly gold gilt. The plaque has a fine hardwood frame that has been intricately inlaid with silver wire work. The plaque is thinly carved and is highly translucent as seen with an incredible look when light is placed behind the jade plaque. The plaque could use a light cleaning but is otherwise in very fine condition with no damage. The plaque is an impressive large size measuring 21 inches tall, by 12 inches wide including the frame. I believe it is very hard to find spinach jade hu’s of this impressive large size. This plaque is one of the finest quality and impressive examples I have personally ever seen.
