EXQUISITEJAPANESEPORCELAIN BOSATSU STATUE

Edo Period, mid 1800s

Museum quality antique porcelain statue. Magnificent depiction of Monju Bosatsu, the Bodhisattva of infinite wisdom, seated upon an ornate shishi. Sublime quality, made of the finest porcelain during the age of the shogun and samurai. The handsome face is serious, yet serene, expressing simultaneously his responsibilityand meditative peacefulness. Gentle majesty. Bedecked in flowing robes, and elegant brocades of colorful silk which flow and fold gracefully. Monju, or in Sankrit Manjushri, is seated upon a magnificent guardian shishi. This riding-lion form is also known as the Kishi Monju Bosatsu.Monju isportrayedwith a sword in the right hand to cut through illusion (to shed light on the unenlightened mind, and to disperse the clouds of ignorance).

The statue is of superb quality, the finest we have ever offered of this type. Purest porcelain, and sublime expressive details. Exhibits a beautiful patina. In excellent antique condition, dating to the mid 1800s. We note that it appears there was once a halo, the remnant of which is on the upper back below the hair at the shoulder. It looks like an ornament of clothing or collar and does not in any way detract from the statue\'s brilliance. Measures approximately 12.5 inches tall. Displays in tasteful fashion, drawing attention from across the room. Absolutely spectacular piece with minute expressive details and superb craftsmanship. The artisan has carefully depicted the smallest details, from the folds ofthe silken robes, tothe individual toes, to the golden jewels adorning the neckline, and the bindu on the forehead. See photos for all of thesublime details.

A rare treasure of great beauty. The type of cultural object usually reserved for museums and guidebooks. Would make anoutstanding centerpiece for the discriminating connoisseur ofworld class Japanese antiques.
