EXTREMELY FINE VICTORIAN CARVED SHELL CAMEO OF A LADYSuperb carved shell cameoportrait of a lady circa 1850. The portrait may represent someone famous or more likely an unidentified wealthy lady and was probably created during a stay in Rome with all its associations of the \'Grand Tour\'. Clearly carved by a master hand, it brings to mind the renowned Saulini workshop. The detail is wonderfully sensitive, imbuing her facial features with life and warmth. Her hair, with its intricate plaited bun and soft ringlets, is just as beautifully done.
Unfortunately there is damage to the cameo as shown and various fine hairlines in the shell, more obvious when held to light. The carving itself is intact. There is no signature to be found. If it was signed, I am inclined to think the signature may have been lost with the missing piece. It measures approximately 53mm tall.
