This is an Extremely Rare large Georgian Winged Cherub Solid Silver Chamber Stick crafted in Rome Italy in Circa 1815 making it 200 years old, this Georgian Chamber Stick is very rare and Unique and extremely Special, you will not find another like this not only in design but also of its age, the silver hallmark to the side is an early mark that was reintroduced into Rome in 1815\"crossed keys of St. Peter under a liturgical umbrella\" enclosed into shields, ovals or other geometric shapes, you will also see a makers mark but its a little rubbed and hard to make out i believe it is P16?though the end letter is to rubbed to read. This amazing Chamber Stick is stunning from its scrolled foliage which creates the stand to the scroll flying leaf handle to carry to Chamber Stick, to the centre of the stick you will see 2 leaf scrolls to which in the centre is a flower bud with this beautiful Winged Cherub raising out as though blossoming like a flower, the cherub itself is so very detailed and finely cast, from his beautiful open wings which have chased feathers, to his wonderful body and extremely detailed and exquisite face and this is finished with a mop of curly hair, he is holding foliage in his lovely little hand and out of that appears a stunning candle holder with cast panels of stars to the body, the top splays out and has a lovely striped edging, all this stands upon a spread stepped base that has beautiful embossed decoration, to the centre bud you will see a tiny hole to both sides this i believe is where the snuffer would have once sat, on turning the Chamber Stick over you will see it is not weighted at all and has 3 solid silver screws attaching the body to the base, the quality of the craftsmanship is superb, this would have once belonged to a very wealthy family and used daily for lighting there way around the house as they went from room to room or up to bed, what i must say is the condition is stunning with just a some dings and bruising to the side of the base and a little bruise to the top, no splits or repairs at all, it measures 6 inches high and 7 cm diameter at the base, it weighs 111.4 grams, this will add something extremely rare and very special to any collection
The warranty mark used prior to the French invasion was a series of \"crossed keys of St. Peter under a liturgical umbrella\" enclosed into shields, ovals or other geometric shapesNapoleon Bonaparte, by decree dated May 17, 1809, attached to the French Empire the territories belonging to the Papal State.Rome was declared \"Imperial and Free City\" including the town of Rome, its surroundings and the Departments of Viterbo, Velletri, Frosinone, Tivoli, Rieti, Spoleto, Perugia, Assisi and Todi (\"Prima Ricupera\", see below). With imperial decree dated April 13, 1810 was introduced in the Roman territories the French model of hallmarking the precious metal.
After the fall of Napoleon, the Congress of Vienna restored the Pope in his territories and, on 24 May 1814, Pope Pius VII returned to Rome
On January 7, 1815 was published the \"Bando Generale sulla garanzia delle manifatture d\'oro ed argento\" (General rules about the warranty of silver and gold artefacts).Rome and Departments were restored to the previous system based on ounces and new hallmarks were established to replace those adopted during the French Administration
Also introduced a maker\'s mark of diamond (lozenge) shape containing the initials of the silversmith and a number attributed by the Rome Assay Office. Thanks for looking
