He was the commander of the 8th SS Panzer Division \"Florian Geyer\", the 2nd SS Panzer Division \"Das Reich\", The 9th SS Panzer Division \"Hohenstaufen\", and finally the 2nd SS Panzer Korps. During the Battle of Arnhem during the failed allied \"Market Garden\" offensive, he paused his attacks to accept critically wounded Allied soldiers into his already burdened hospitals.
