Early 1900s Mountaineering Axe

Incredibly rare piece of American mountaineering history!

-Incredible condition for over 100 years old!

-Hickory shaft; 39” long

-Hand forged steel head; 7 ¼” wide; the rawhidearound the axe head has come off the top

-Hand soldered butt pick

-Waxed threads wrapped around shaft for snowmeasurement; notice the alternating narrow and wide banding to help with quickmeasurement of snow depth

-Hickory shaft is sold and not cracked

History:

I have had this beautiful piece in my antique collection forquite some time. It was purchased froman estate sale in the mid-1980s in a small town in Montana from a true pioneerto the sport of mountaineering. Thefamily believed he had used it between, roughly, 1910 through the early1920s. It is believed to have been hadmade by a local Montana fly rod maker. This explains the materials used. Unfortunately,I cannot remember the man’s name or the town where it was purchased, so it ismore of a legend than a proven fact. I tried to work to track down the familyand the town, but with no luck. Any wayyou look at it, this axe is a true piece of American mountaineering history. Thispiece is a true survivor because most of these items were thrown away by thefamilies when these pioneers past away.

I had the axe appraised, and everything matched up to theopinion of the appraiser.
