This coat is believed to be a Royal Navy captain’s dress coat. Its label displays the name of the maker, “Gieve, Matthews & Seagrove Ltd”, together with a typewritten date “15/8/10”, a reference number “P.238”, and the name of the officer for whom it was made, “H. L. Barrow”.The maker’s name changed to Gieves Ltd after the First World War.

Its brass buttons feature a fouled anchor surmounted by a Tudor crown (aka a King’s crown), used on naval uniforms between 1902 and 1953.They have backmarks that also read “Gieve, Matthews & Seagrove Ltd”.

The coat measures: 19 ins (48.5 cms) armpit to armpit, 16 ins (41 cms) collar to waist and 41 ins (104.5cms) collar to tail.

Apart from some wear around the collar, it is in very good condition for its age.

H. L. Barrow:

Hubert Lloyd Barrow was born in 1889, the second son of Admiral Arthur Barrow.Having joined the Royal Navy in 1907, this coat was made for him in 1910 on his appointment as a Royal Navy assistant paymaster at the age of 21.It was presumably ‘upgraded’ with the captain\'s insignia on his promotion to that rank later in his career. He went on to become Secretary to the First Sea Lord in 1938, with a rank of paymaster captain, and was awarded a CBE shortly before his death in 1940.
