Up for sale is a beautiful, minutely-stitched, antique needlework sampler, worked in silk on a linen ground, and dating to 1819. This was made by Jenny Fleming and it is dated July 20, 1819. This sampler is ornately worked, and features: a lovely winding vine border of tulips and strawberries, several rows of the alphabet and numbers, stitched in various upper and lower case fonts, a row of four lions walking amidst red zinnias, a row with two fancy peacocks flanking a pretty fruit bowl, with flower pots beside the peacocks, a row devoted to a large intricately stitched garland of red roses, and a large brick house with planters full of rose bushes on either side and four birds flying overhead. Under the house are the initials of Jenny\'s Parents, JF and MD, and then (what I suspect are) the initials of all their children, MF, JF, HF, and MF, then Jenny\'s full name and the date, July 20th, 1819. All in all, the stitches are tiny and uniform in tightness, and the colors and composition are pleasing.
This sampler is in very good condition. Remarkably, there are no holes or tears in this piece, no color runs, and no stains. The only apology is that a few threads have worn away on the roof of the house and on a few of the flowers in the outer garland. This sampler has been professionally framed. The sampler measures 10\" by 17\" not counting the mat and frame, and the frame measures 16 1/2\" by 23 1/2\". The frame is very pretty.
