The United States Lighthouse Establishment started operating in 1789, under the Department of the Treasury. In the early 1900s, the name United States Lighthouse Service began to creep into use and by 1910 "Establishment" was dropped from the name all together. These oil containers were used by the lighthouse keeper\'s to measure and transfer oil for the lamps.
This measure is a RARE one pint size. The body features a brass slug plate that reads "U.S. LIGHT HOUSE ESTABLISHMENT". Overall the measure stands 5\'\' tall with a 3 1/4\'\' base diameter.
