Presenting an extraordinary and rare mid-century Modernist metal sculpture by the Lancaster, Pennsylvania artst, EDMUND WHITING (1918-1975). Whiting, a nationally known sculptor, died young (57) and whose works are rare, waswas headof the art department at Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster,Pennsylvania. Mr. Whiting had taught atCoe College in Iowa and the Art Institute of Chicago. He became professor and chairman of theFranklin & Marshall art department in 1966. An authority on Indian art, he was a Fulbrightresearch scholar in India from 1959 to 1960.Whiting may be best known for his fountain sculpture located in Lancaster’s Penn Square. He encouragedstudents to learn about Lancaster’s heritage in order to understand hissculpture. Other examples of his workcan be found at the Phillips Museum of Art at Franklin & Marshall College. Other major and public works include, Untitled Crab, 1972, Federal Hill Elementary School, commissioned by Baltimorearchitect, Charles M. Nes (1907-1989); Madonna,Limestone, date unknown, Phillips Museum outdoor sculpture trail; and The Presidency, 1968, Phillips Museum.

Provenance: Estatefresh and gifted to the original owner, a professor at Bryn Mawr College, by the artist whose wife studied at Bryn Mawr College near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Whiting indicated he fashioned the sculpturefrom airplane parts, circa 1964. I could find no signature. Last picture shows sculpture in situ on Blindheim Mobelfabrik wall unit, circa 1969 (upper right hand corner of picture).
