Thisis a lovely, solid silver gilt, replica of the Coronation anointing spoon madeto commemorate, Edward VIII; who acceded to the throne but abdicated before hewas actually crowned. The original spoon is the oldest serving piece ofregalia; first recorded in 1349 and probably made for the coronation of HenryII or Richard l.

Apartfrom the usual fine surface marks and some wear to the gilding, it is inexcellent condition for 81 years old.

Itmeasures approx. 9.5 cm long, with thebowl 2.7 cm x 2.3 cm across the widest points and weighs 9.2 grams.

Thehallmarks are: The lion passant for English 925 silver, the leopard’s head forthe London assay office, with the date letter ‘A’ for 1936 and the maker’s markfor Saunders, Shepherd & Co Ltd.
