We have one of the best vintage shoe collections we\'ve ever seen, but there\'s a point where you run out of space and something has to go.
These wearable size 7 1950\'s or 1960\'s black suede springolator mules have a beautiful metal rosette decoration on the vamp and are in excellent condition. From about 1958-63 these would have been considered elegant fashion for a night out. A majority of surviving springolators are small sizes, but these are a true size 7 (see measurements below), Don\'t know their provenance, but we have had them for the last 25 years in a smoke free home.
These are nicely made, as was typical of the era, and the suede remains in excellent condition (see detailed pics above). The leather soles show that they were worn by the original owner, but they are in good condition. Heel caps are in good condition, with just a hint of metal showing in one.
Since vintage sizes vary, compare these measurements to those of shoes you own, though they are labeled a 7 and these are the classic vintage size 7 measurements:Footpad length (measuring tape pressed down against curve of arch): 9.5 inchesSole width at widest point: 3.5\"Heel height: 4\"The deal about vintage shoes and clothing:Vintage items are 25 to 75 years old or more, and they will not be perfect like brand new items you buy in a store. They often -- but not always -- have superior workmanship to what we see in similar classes of items today. They also have more individuality, since parts of the process will have been done by hand rather than under computer control.
Always compare measurements of vintage items with those of clothing or shoes you wear today, and don\'t just rely on sizes. Sizes change over time for marketing reasons, and change in different ways for different items. A size 10 dress in 1960 is different from a size 10 in 1985 and a size 10 today.
Vintage items are more likely to have natural fabrics and materials, but those natural fibers may also show evidence of age. If you buy vintage items (as we obviously do) you accept that you\'re getting history and often individuality, but you are not getting perfection. Most items have some kind of nick, snag or other fault. The ones we see will be pointed out in our listings, but the little flaws we miss will still be there, and that\'s true for the items of every vintage seller. If you buy vintage, you have to accept that the imperfections are an acceptable tradeoff for the craftsmanship and history.
