Emerson Model DB-296 Antique Wood Cabinet Tube Radio 1939 Serviced & Working:
$83.00

MODEL, YEAR, FEATURES:    The Emerson Model DB-296 is a five tube AM radio dating to 1939.  For a 78 year old appliance, it’s in fine shape and the electronics have been recently brought back to reliable playing condition.   It’s wood cabinet is distinguished by horizontal louvers, a brightly lighted dial window, and a pull-up handle on top.  The black Bakelite acorn shaped knobs and jeweled brass dial pointer accent the face nicely.  Controls are simple Volume and Tuning and the radio is performing well.

CONDITION, SERVICING, PERFORMANCE:  Cabinet is in great condition, retaining a nice even original finish.  There are minor scratches here and there from gentle handling over the years, but no dents, gouges, or other signs of abuse.  The wood panels are firmly bonded, and the only treatment I’ve given the cabinet is a coat of wax.  Radio has its original knobs, and the gold foil dial scale is in excellent shape with razor sharp graphics and numerals that are nicely lit by the inner pilot light as seen in photos.  I replaced the dial cover with a crystal clear new one, and installed a new protective back board as well with an accurate replica.  I went through the electronics on this five tube set and performed many checks of components, alignment, solder joints, etc.  The old wax / foil capacitors were replaced along with the filter caps, component tolerances were checked, and I replaced a number of crumbling wires as well.  I replaced the AC power cord with a safer polarized type, and rewired the chassis  to keep dangerous voltages off it.  Tuning and dial mechanism were serviced, and the pointer rotates smoothly.  Interior and chassis are quite clean with no dust build-up or odors, and the loop antenna is in exc shape.  The radio is sensitive and picks up all our AM stations across the band with minimum hum or distortion with pleasant sound from the original speaker that probably broadcast the news of the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941.  Made in USA Emerson radio will be well worth saving for generations to come, and will display beautifully on a shelf or collection.

DIMENSIONS, SHIPPING:    Radio measures 10.3  inches wide, stands 7.5 in tall, and is 6 in deep from front of knobs to back panel (old 6.5 Oz Coke bottle in one photo placed to give a sense of scale).  I’ve shipped well over a thousand delicate tube radios worldwide for the past 18 years on with fine packing materials and methods, so no worries. Radio will be sent off with its schematic / servicing diagram on the day or day after payment is received via insured ground shipping.
