EP-61, HB-19, S-10, Reed-AP05. Five Cents. TAKE AYER’S PILLS. Choice Extremely Fine.
Rated as Rarity-8 (5 to 10 known) according to Fred Reed. This is an impressive quality example of an important Encased Postage Stamp rarity. The Thomas Jefferson stamp is well centered and attractive, deep rich natural chestnut-brown in color. The mica is excellent, being crystal clear and unbroken. The case has only the slightest of wear, being defect free but for a faint hairline on the reverse. The text of the legend is extremely sharp and has a bold appearance.The single example in the Stack’s, John J. Ford, Jr. Collection Sale, June 2004, was also graded EF and brought $1,610 being about eight years ago. We have only sold three examples in 30 years. The finest example we sold was in our EAHA sale, June 28, 1998, Lot 473, graded About New, which sold at $2,415 some fourteen years ago! More recently, our EAHA sale of June 26, 2010, Lot 444, graded Choice EF, sold for $3,540. Extremely rare.
