This is a beautiful Italian etching by German-American artist Ernest D. Roth (1879-1964). The scene is Via San Francesco Fiesole and dates from 1914. It depicts the famous San Francesco monastery in Fiesole, Italy which is just outside of Florence. It is a great example of Roth\'s work from Europe. It is well composed with the monastery occupying most of the right side of the image with the tower arranged on the \'golden section\'. In the foreground is a small group of figures, very lightly etched. In the hills in the background the village is depicted extending into the hills. A contemporary writing about Roth\'s work and comparing it to contemporaries mentions this specific work, \"... Fiesole from San Francesco is one of the very best etchings made in the last few years. It clinched my opinion of Roth, that he is not only good but among the 12\" [12 best American etchers]
Ernest D. Roth (1879-1964) was born in Stuttgart Germany, but emigrated to the United States with his family at age 5. He embarked on an artistic career, studying painting with George Maynard and Edgar Ward at the National Academy of Design and F. Luis Mora at the New York School of Art. He regularly exhibited works at the National Academy and Pennsylvania Academy. He received many awards for his work including the Salamagundi Club (1911, 1912, 1915, 1917, 1918), the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1930), etching societies including Chicago (1914, 1936) and the Society of American Etchers (1935). At the Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1915 he received a silver medal for etching and a bronze medal for painting. His works are held by many museums including the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the Nelson-Atkins Museum, the Burchfield-Penney Art Center, the San Diego Museum of Art and the National Academy of Design. The etching technique is extraordinary as would be expected by an artist of his stature. It is a crisp printing with outstanding plate toning that adds depth to the image. It is signed, dated and titled and signed in pencil and in the plate. It is archivally framed and matted (I did this for an exhibition of the etching revival). Size is 18 x 16 inches framed. The image (plate) size is 10 x 9 inches.
