  • Item: Damaged but rare 1893 Adirondack etching entitled \"Cosy Corner In Camp Oteetiwi Raquette Lake Adirondacks\" by Arpad Geyza Charles Gerster (Am., 1848-1923). Reference: “Wild Impressions: Prints From The Collection Of The Adirondack Museum” by David Tatham, #117, 58.273.14. Gerster is of major interest to the Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, New York but I have not shown this item to the museum (or anyone for that matter). Gerster tells an interesting tale, found on the internet, of his travels to and from Carry Pond where he seems to know the Adirondacks like the back of his hand! He wrote that north of the Nig*erheads, a chain of hills visible from Raquette Lake on the trail between Little Forked and Little Tupper Lake is Carry Pond. It was a charming trip from Raquette Lake down to Long Lake, then onto Big Tupper, Little Tupper, Rock Pond, Bottle Pond, Sutton Pond, Carry Pond, to Little Forked, Big Forked Lakes and back to Raquette. The etching offered here is plate signed only. Matted but unframed. Attention International Buyers: The item may be too big to ship to your country... Please contact me for a shipping quote before offerding. If not too big, item ships via USPS Express Mail International, and with the price you pay declared on Customs forms. Your signature is required. Thanks for understanding.
  • Markings: Titled, signed and dated in the plate.
  • Age: 1893.
  • Condition: Used. Damaged condition. Two pieces of tape hold it to the matting . Stains, abrasion or paper rubbing (upper left margin area), yellowing to paper, etc. I\'m certain that the etching can be repaired but you\'ll have to take it to a top-notch paper conservator and that restorer will have to do a (possibly) expensive job to this to get it looking better. Sold in \"AS-IS\" condition -- Thanks for understanding.
  • Dimensions: Image size: approx. 5 3/8 x 8 ¾ inches. Sight size: approx. 6 x 9 ½ inches. Sheet size: approx. 9 1/8 x 12 5/8 inches. Overall with matting: approx. 11 x 14 ½ inches.
  • Origin: Discovered in New Jersey, USA.
  • Features: An online press release from the Adirondack Museum: November 30, 2010, Blue Mountain Lake, NY — In time for holiday giving, the Adirondack Museum, Blue Mountain Lake, New York announces the publication of Notes Collected in the Adirondacks 1897 & 1898 by Arpad Geyza Gerster, edited by Sidney S. Whelan, Jr. The new volume is a continuation of Notes Collected in the Adirondacks 1895 & 1896, the Fishing and Hunting Diary with Insights of a Physician, Scholar, and Humanist, acclaimed by Bill McKibben, Nelson Bryant, and Nick Lyons, and many others. A surgeon who practiced at Mt. Sinai in New York City in the late 1890s and early 1900s, Dr. Arpad Gerster, Hungarian by birth, was also a sportsman, linguist, and an artist. Both diaries chronicle his visits to the Adirondacks, where he had camps at Raquette Lake and later Long Lake. Gerster\'s vivid, often humorous observations of nature and people, his delight in the outdoors, and his drawings and etchings offer a larger portrait of the Adirondack region in the age of William West Durant, Great Camps, railroads, and the beginning of the conservation movement. Illustrated with Gerster\'s own work as well as maps of the region from the 1890s, the latest book contains an interview with Dr. John C. A. Gerster, Dr. Arpad Gerster\'s son, and a detailed index covering both volumes. The new book is soft cover, contains 224 pages, and is priced at $29.95. The book is available through the Adirondack Museum Store in Blue Mountain Lake, N.Y. or online. The Adirondack Museum Store is open for holiday shopping Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through December 23, 2010. The Adirondack Museum tells stories of the people — past and present — who have lived, worked, and played in the unique place that is the Adirondack Park. History is in our nature. The museum is supported in part by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State Agency. For information about all that the museum has to offer, please call (518) 352-7311.
  • Background: From the net: The Adirondack Mountains are an unusual geological formation located in the northEastern lobe of Upstate New York in the United States. The mountains rise in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Lewis, St. Lawrence, Saratoga, Warren, and Washington counties. Unlike other mountain ranges that run along fault lines, the Adirondack mountains resemble a dome. They were formed by recent uplift that has exposed previously deeply buried and ancient rocks more than a billion years old. The same rocks can be found in the Laurentian Mountains of Quebec, Canada, and the Adirondacks can be considered the southernmost expression of this range. They are bordered on the east by Lake Champlain and Lake George, which separate them from the Green Mountains in Vermont. They are bordered to the south by the Mohawk Valley, and to the west by the Tug Hill Plateau, separated by the Black River. This region is south of the Saint Lawrence River.
