We are looking at a quite unusual interpretation of the famous biblical subject: here, the author refrained from the traditional, \"surface\" variant by substituting the easel with boat and assigning the Holy Family on its flight to Egypt the company of three archangels.
Eugene-Auguste-Francois Deully (1860 Lille - 1833) studied at the Parisian Ecole des Arts decoratifs and Ecole des Beaux-Arts (under Jean Leon Gerome, Auguste Barthelemy Glaize and Leon Glaize). In 1892, he obtained a scholarship for studying abroad and subsequently visited Italy, the Netherlands and Belgium.
Afterwards, he worked as a drawing teacher at the Parisian Collège Sainte-Barbe. In 1897-1912, he was the chief curator of the Lille Museum of Fine Art. In 1927, he was awarded the Order of Legion of Honor.
In his early period, Deully painted chiefly symbolist, religious (sic!) and mythological subjects; later on - portrait and genre scenes.
He exhibited between 1880-1933 with the Society of the French Artists, Society of the Artists of Lyon (earning Grand Prix in 1894), Society of the Art Lovers of Nantes, Society of the Artists of Pas-de-Calais in Arras, etc.
Works of this artist can be viewed in museums of Douai, Dunkerque, Saint-Omer, Tourcoing, etc.
