Exceptional 18th Century Peter Mazell print from British Zoology T Pennant –1766:
$250.00

I am selling an exceptional print by Peter Mazell anengraver active in London from 1761-1797, after a painting by Peter Paillou (c.1720-c1790). The print was published in 1766 by Thomas Pennant (1726-1798), inhis famous work, “British Zoology.” It was famous because it was exceptionallywell done and so expensive to produce that it just about bankrupted Pennant. Pennant, probably the bestknown British ornithologist of the eighteenth century, was the first to attemptto list and portray all of the British species, many of them life-size. Please check my other sales for anotherwork from the same volume. This print is Plate 98. It measures 19” x 14” thesheet and 16 ¼” x 12” the plate. It appears that app.1 ½” has been trimmed fromthe top edge and ½” has been trimmed from the bottom edge. It is on I.Villedary laid paper and bears the I Villedary watermark. Seven birds are beautifullydepicted perching on various branches. The colors are strong and nicelysaturated, but not garish. The print is in good condition or fair to goodcondition, depending on your grading system. It has one 1” tear on the rightedge, half way up, not into the plate. The tear has been repaired on thereverse. There is some abrasion on the left, upper and lower edges. There is verylight toning throughout. There is tape on the back, also shown in myphotos. This print is 250 years old, butstill shows beautifully. It would make a beautiful addition to a serious printcollection. As well, it is just plain beautiful, and would enhance any room itperched in.
