George VI Coronation Chairs
After the coronations of George V in 1911, George VIin 1937 and of Elizabeth II in 1953, it was decided to sell off some of thetrappings of the events. After each of the Coronations the chairs and stoolswhich the guests had used were offered for sale to with first refusal given tothe people who had occupied the seat at the ceremony. As they offered a uniqueand lasting souvenir of such a great occasion they were eagerly snapped up.
The chairs and stools from the coronation of George VIwere made from limed oak and were upholstered in a dark green velour fabric, while the ones from Elizabeth II’s were made from silver powdered British oakand upholstered in a regal blue velour fabric. Both were stamped underneathwith the sovereign’s initials. In style they have overwrap seats and a fullpadded back rest which has the monarch’s initials and a crown embroidered onthe front.
The chairs were used by the more important guest whilethe stools were allocated to the less important people.
The original sale price in 1953 was £7-10-0d for achair and £4-7-6d for a stool (£7.50 and £4.371/2 respectively.) Putting thisinto perspective the average weekly wage in 1953 was £9.25. The price thesechairs and stools fetch now is substantially influenced by the person whooriginally occupied them. For example a pair of stools used in the 1937Coronation by Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks Junior with a pre- saleestimate of $200 – $300 realised $2,500 when his estate was sold, while thechair used by Queen Mary at the 1937 Coronation, sold from the collection ofHRH Princess Margaret in June 2006 by Christies, for a staggering £38,400
