The weight of this exquisite early antique Lazarus Posen Witwe, German Gilt 800 Silver Basket is 5.6 oz. It measures 5 inches in height to the top of the handle, 2-1/2 inches in height to the top of the basket and 6 X 4-1/2 inches in diameter. It is marked with the makers name and early marks for POSEN, and the German 800 Silver hallmarks. This fantastic, aesthetic fantasy piece displays the height of Posen\'s aesthetic ability. This basket is lightly gilded and accented with bark texture, and assimilated branch handles wrapped with applied cord design. This is one of the largest pieces I have ever seen by Posen and his quality speaks in every aspect. The firm was founded in Frankfurt on the Main in 1869 by Brendina Wetzlar, the widow of Lazarus Jacob Posen, a silversmith and retailer of Polish descent. Under the widow Posen’s stewardship, the firm became the largest supplier of Judaica in the late 19th century. Her son Jacob L. Posen joined the firm by 1880, and by 1900, the company’s large staff of chasers and engravers were producing some of the finest silver in the country. They received a royal warrant in 1903.
