Antique Bing & Grondahl Compotes

You are viewing what I believe to be a pair of extremely rare and very early Bing & Grondahl compotes when they first started their own company around 1853. They are hand painted with four panels in the center and trimmed in cobalt blue with a swag of decorative gilt trim. The base is also painted with flowers and more gold trim. They are extremely fine and come from an old estate in Baltimore. They were valuable enough that one was professionally repaired probably about 50 years ago. (The repair has now yellowed a bit and you can see what was repaired. I show pictures of this.)

Underneath the foot you can see an \"X\" with the \"B\" over the \"G\" which is not the normal mark. But the B & G are correct for Bing and Grondahl, including the font used at this time and it is blue. What is unusual is the X which leads me to believe it is a very early example when maybe they were still deciding on the mark to use. Or since this is in the style of the extremely popular Meissen at the time, maybe they were thinking of using an X as an imitation of their mark. It is known they eventually went with \"B&G\" in blue.
