This is an extremely rare WWII Vintage Holophane 12\" Infrared Ship Signaling Lens.
Perhaps Holophane\'s most significant contribution to the WWII war effort was the development of the Infrared Signaling Lamp. German & Japanese submarines wreaked havoc on Allied fleets by honing in on the light of the signaling lamps used between ships to communicate maneuvering information. To enable it\'s fleets to slip through the seas undetected, the Allies needed a way for ships to signal each other without alerting enemy subs. Holophane addressed the problem by developing a signal lens that used invisible infrared radiation, or heat, instead of visible light. The innovation proved so successful that Holophane\'s invention remained a closely held secret of the U.S. Navy for many years.

Inside markings: TOP THIS SIDE IN 6.5* (with horizontal arrows) 10.5* (with vertical arrows) The inside surface is prismatic.
Outside marking: 11-13 The outside surface is flat.
Weight 3-1/4 lbs.
Excellent condition - no chips or cracks that we can detect. There is one very light scratch on the inside surface.
