An Arts & Crafts Tudric pewter box with a hinged lid, which has an enameled plaque depicting a galleon at sea. The lid is hammer-textured, and everted with a curved overhang, so it extends beyond the sides of the box. The box is lined with wood.The enamel is in good condition, although it does have some fine hairlines within the enamel, probably produced when cooling on removal from kiln, and not as a result of damage. These hardly show under normal light conditions, and look far worse in my close up photos. I cannot find initials or signature on the front of the enamel. The back is covered, and has not been investigated. Generally the wonderful enamels in Liberty boxes are thought to have been by Charles Fleetwood Varley.The hinge is in good working condition, and the pewter has been lightly hand polished. Some minor surface, age-related wear including a short scratch on the top right-hand corner of the lid. No breaks or repairs. Please see detailed photos.
The underside is stamped with the Tudric number, \'0125\', and scratch codes as shown.Made circa 1901.
This similar box was displayed in the Liberty\'s selling exhibition of 2004 lovely example of original Arts & Crafts, which would display well with any collection of metal wares by such as Archibald Knox, Rex Silver, John Pearson, KSIA, Newlyn, WMF or other contemporary items retailed by Liberty & Co. at the turn of the last century, circa 1900.Will be carefully and lovingly packed!
