FANTASTIC HAND PAINTED PAPIER MACHE PERSIAN QAJAR QALAMDAN (PEN BOX) c.1835/50This is a highly collectible, desirable, Middle Eastern artefact in remarkable condition for its age. Please see the attached photographs which form an integral part of this description.A qalamdan would have been used by Muslim scholars to keep their quills, brushes and other writing implements in.The two parts slide together to enclose the contents. The part where they slot together is irregular by dedign. I understand that it is thought that the more irregular the joining design then the better the quality of the piece.The outside of this item has been hand painted with small flowers on a golden lacquer background. There is, as can be seen in the photos, some areas of loss of the lacquer but this is to be expected on an item as delicate as this.Internally, one part (the \'tray\') has a green painted lining with small floral designs. The \'sheath\' part has some Persian script inside the opening (- sorry I can\'t help with a translation!)The base is a lacquered green colour.This is an item for the discerning collector who will recognise and appreciate the historical and aesthetic qualities of the piece. It will also be recognised that the price at which it is offered, given the overall condition, is still particularly competitive.Dimensions: 24.5cm x 6cm x 6cm
