This is listing is for a very good early 1950\'s original near black stone carving by a Canadian Inuit Eskimo artist.
The artist is unknown. Early examples are not usually signed. The work itself is the signature.
The subject is a mother and child. Note the carved breast forms on the figure\'s chest (you don\'t see that very often).
It is about 7 inches tall.
It weighs about 1.887 kg.
It is in good condition, with a chip on the rear tip of her hood and just over her right shoulder. There may be some other minor surface abrasions - please see the photographs. There are no repairs or cracks.
These early (1950\'s) first generation inuit carvings are the most collectable, and do not come on the market often. These are the artistic works of the last generation of nomadic natives in North America. The artist who made this figure would have been born in a seal skin tent, and is almost certainly now dead. He would have lived a life style that no longer exists.
